KDBA ANNOUNCES 2021 SCHEDULE
The Kentucky Drag Boat Association has announced a four-event schedule for the 2021 season, with the quartet of MAVTV Motorsports Network races all scheduled for the state-of-the-art Lake Lucas at Lucas Oil Speedway in Wheatland, Missouri.
The KDBA Drag Boat Spring Opener is set for May 14-16, followed by the KDBA Summer Thunder on Lake Lucas June 12-13 and the Show-Me Shootout July 31-August 1. KDBA President Barry Salsman said he has worked on a purse structure with Lucas Oil Director of Racing Operations Dan Robinson and those three races each will pay out a guaranteed $30,000 purse.
The season finale over Labor Day Weekend, the 11th annual Diamond Drag Boat Nationals Sept. 3-5, will have a $37,500 purse. Lucas Oil and the KDBA are putting up the purse money for each event.
All four of the KDBA events are scheduled to be produced for television on the MAVTV Motorsports Network. Salsman said the television coverage is an exciting step for his series as it offers drivers and sponsors additional exposure.
In addition, the 2020 KDBA-sanctioned Diamond Drag Boat Nationals will air sometime in January or February 2021 on MAVTV.
The 2020 season saw the KDBA hold three events on the world's first purpose-built drag boat racing lake which is approximately 4,000 feet long and 400 feet wide. The Diamond Drag Boat Nationals drew 163 boats last Labor Day Weekend.
“I thought it went great,” Salsman said of the KDBA’s first season at Lucas Oil Speedway. “We’ve been trying forever to get this club off the ground. It’s kind of hard to run upper-caliber pro boats without some good sponsorship.
“We had a really good turnout. I come from being used to running 50-70 boats, so it was a real shocker for me, but we were real happy with it. It’s as professional an environment you could ever hope to operate in. We were thrilled with how the season went.
“In 2019 we averaged about 50 boats a race and 65 members and went to averaging 110 boats a race and we got around 90 members. It’s been all good for us.”
